About MArque

Marque Garaux, a US Marine Veteran, long time rock climber and overall outdoor enthusiast, discovered Ashtanga Yoga while seeking different ways to alleviate his lower back pain. After noticing an almost immediate physical change, Marque then slowly began to see other positive changes happening in his life as well. With no Ashtanga teachers in the area, he found himself with no choice but to get up early and practice on his own before work everyday. During this time Marque also attended a 200 hour teacher training and several Ashtanga workshops and intensives to deepen his understanding of this beautiful system.

In the fall of 2014 Marque decided to follow in the footsteps of the teachers that he most respected and applied for study at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI). Marque was accepted and spent the first 2 months of 2015 in Mysore, India learning under the guidance of R. Sharath Jois. Marque has practiced with Sharath during multipe US tours and has also returned to India each year since and has practiced with both Sharath and Saraswathi. Marque received the blessing as an Authorized Level 2 teacher from Sharath on December 12th, 2017 during his morning practice.

Marque is the owner of Great Lakes Ashtanga Yoga, where he runs a full Mysore program, teaches private lessons and hosts workshops. He, his wife and their adopted Indian street dog travel as often as possible to climb or to share yoga with others.

Saturday Workshop times and content:

10am - 11.30am: Half Led Primary Series
12pm - 5pm: Balance ( Includes 1 hour lunch)

Balance: Living Between Ease and Effort

In this program we will discuss the importance of balance in all parts of our lives from the obvious and easy to discuss to the more subtle and sometimes difficult topics. This workshop would not be balanced itself without a strong dose of movement, so be prepared to challenge yourself. The practice of asana encourages mental, emotional and of course physical balance. We will break down the difficult asanas and vinyasa sequences of the Ashtanga Yoga system and learn to find the space between ease and effort.

Sunday Workshop times and content:

10.30am- 12.30PM: Full Led Primary Class
1.30pm - 4pm: Backbends

Intelligent Backbending

After a thorough warm up Marque will begin leading you through some gentle backbends to help lengthen the spine and draw awareness to what is happening within. You will then take an in depth look at unhealthy vs healthy backbends, learn to recognize the differences both visually and more importantly how they feel in your body. Once you are more informed about your backbending, you will be able to learn the steps required to deepen them safely. We will also be exploring the mysteries of dropping back and standing up as well as some of the second series backbends.

We expect this course to be extermely popular so early booking is required.....
