Sun Salutations - A breakdown for Irish Sign Language Users

Hot Yoga Dublin

Sunday March 24th 2019 3:30 am –  5:30 pm

Many yoga classes will begin with a series of sun salutations (traditionally called surya namaskar), which are a sequence of movements that serve to strengthen and lengthen most muscles in the body, while also helping to sync your movement and breath to calm your nervous system. The benefits each of the movements bring are endless. Irish sign language users often miss out on these benefits as communication on how to perform each movement is often lost or non-existent. In this 2 hour workshop, The life of a CODA will take time in explaining each movement, with care, patience and all through Irish Sign Language. Providing modifications for everyone, so that all levels are welcome to join this workshop. We will begin with connecting to our breath. Followed by a breakdown of each of the 12 poses. Ending the practice with a long and relaxing, assisted savasana.

Yoga certified teacher, Personal Trainer, and CODA, Laura O'Grady of 'The life of a CODA', is hugely passionate about all things movement. She aims to raise awareness, provide accessibility and inclusion to those who have limited options or perhaps are forgotten about when it comes to all things fitness and yoga related. "Anyone who does yoga or is a regular gym goer, is familiar with the great benefits each can bring, to both our mental and physical health. Movement really does enrich our lives. With the fitness and yoga industry growing popular in Ireland, we're spoiled for a range of yoga classes or fitness classes. Deaf and hard of hearing usually miss out on the communication aspect of these classes. I feel privileged to have the gift of sign to be able to communicate and guide others on my love for movement."
