Yoga Biomechanics: Redefining Stretching

Classical asana meets the latest scientific research in this 5-day course led by Jules Mitchell MS, CMT, ERYT500. Building on her Science of Stretching curriculum, this expanded course approaches asana from an orthopedic perspective – evaluating the benefits and resolving many unknowns about stretching.

Foundational concepts of biomechanics will be applied to both active and restorative postures. This course also dives into the physiology and behavior of biological tissues and how they adapt to repeated mechanical stresses.

Experience how to best achieve desired tissue change in asana through manual adjustments, purposeful prop placement, and the concept of co-contraction. You will gain confidence in using postures as assessments and therapeutic tools both in your practice and private sessions. Question common cues and popular buzzwords to avoid ambiguous and unnecessary instructions.

This course will also unwrap the extraordinary potential of movement on neural adaptations and proprioception, as well as chemical adaptations and cellular biology. All this and more will be explored through the lens of yoga asana to develop a deeper understanding of the how and why of postures, which will undoubtedly challenge the conventional script.

Topics include:

  • Stretch tolerance
  • Resistance stretching
  • Exploring isometric and eccentric loading in asana
  • Increasing end range performance
  • Alignment and variability
  • Stress, strain and time-dependent outcomes
  • Adjustments and prop placement for a biomechanical purpose
  • Principles of somatics
  • Neuroplasticity
  • Proprioception and interoception
  • Breathing mechanics and its influence on mobility

This course is eligible for 40-hours of CECs and includes a brief homework component where teachers learn to critically evaluate a yoga related scientific study to assess methods, comprehend outcomes and determine its practical relevance in teaching. While slightly intimidating at first, this lesson turns out to be everyone’s favorite part! Please bring a journal, either electronic or paper.
