Surya Namaskara: Why We Salute the Sun

The Yoga Makaranda, one of the oldest-known yogic texts to describe the Sun Salutation sequence, was written in 1934 by T. Krishnamacharya. He was the teacher of K. Pattabhi Jois (founder of the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute) and B.K.S. Iyengar (founder of Iyengar Yoga) and it was these two great teachers that gave birth to almost all of today’s modern practices. During this workshop, Marque will teach you the mind and body benefits of saluting the sun 6 days a week and will lead you through the classic forms of the sun A and sun B as well as modified versions for people of all ability level. Additionally we will explore other more challenging ways of moving through the forward and backward transitions that can be used to create unbelievable strength in your personal practice. Whether you have practiced for a month, a year or a decade this is a workshop that you will not want to miss.

Balance: Living Between Ease and Effort

(this workshop is done in 2 sessions of 2 hours per session)

In this program we will discuss the importance of balance in all parts of our lives from the obvious and easy to discuss to the more subtle and sometimes difficult topics. This workshop would not be balanced itself without a strong dose of movement, so be prepared to challenge yourself. The practice of asana encourages mental, emotional and of course physical balance. We will break down the difficult asanas and vinyasa sequences of the Ashtanga Yoga system and learn to find the space between ease and effort.

About Marque & Sarah :

Marque and Sarah both, independently, found yoga in their early 20's but didn't crossed paths this way. It was rock climbing and their mutual love of the outdoors that brought them together years later. Once they discovered the physical and mental parallels that Ashtanga and climbing shared they both knew this was their yoga practice. With no Ashtanga teachers in the area, they found themselves with no choice but to get up early and practice together without a teacher before work each day. During this time they attended a 200 hour teacher training and several Ashtanga workshops and intensives.

In the fall of 2014 Marque decided to follow in the footsteps of the teachers that he most respected and applied for study at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI). Sarah was unable to make the trip because of her work schedule but selflessly encouraged Marque to make the trip. Marque was accepted and spent the first 2 months of 2015 in Mysore, India learning under the guidance of R. Sharath Jois. After many trips and 10 years of dedicated practice Marque received the blessing to teach from Sharath.

Marque and Sarah are the owners of Great Lakes Ashtanga Yoga, where they run a full Mysore program, teach private lessons and host workshops. Marque and Sarah, along with their adopted Indian street dog travel as often as possible to climb and to share yoga with others.
